The reason why "I" am the MAN!!!

Posted by Revolving magnum condom filler

I love a good argument; so much so that I will find a position and defend almost anything imaginable with some ease. Recently I posted a status on my Facebook that stated how I believed non-English speakers are at a great disadvantage in this country. I came to this conclusion after walking out from the parking deck of my school this morning.
In order to gain access to parking deck you must swipe your ID; other wise you would press a button to speak to public safety telling them your parking tag number(you have to pay for parking). There is no other way to gain access to the building. Until today! I observed as I walked out through the entrance that an Indian student pressed the button, where he was asked for his parking tag number. Almost as if he inveigled the public safety officer on the other line with his beautiful dialect, that contained nothing but a cacophony of spits and coughs. Not only did this person not speak English, but i don't think he even spoke his native tongue well. Yet it was effective enough to get him access to the parking deck.

Anyways... Below is the Facebook convo that led to me destroying someone, with my keyboard/I-Phone (an English major at that), in which she had to concede using a lame excuse.

I get kinda giddy and cocky when I do these types of things to people; sorry i dont mean to be an ass. Jessica-I still love you, but I cannot be messed with.

Enjoy the destruction!

Quaison: "NOT speaking English is now an advantage."

especially if you're in Miami

Being a native speaker of english is one of the GREATEST advantages actually!! But what's even better is being mulitlingual!!!

I have watched countless individuals- whom do not speak English well- manipulate the system in unimaginable ways. And yes, being multilingual is an advantage, but only when you're not speaking the language being spoken around you; with full comprehension of surrounding dialogue.

Manipulating the system??? The obvious fact that every system stands a chance the being circumvented does not merit those manipulating factions to be rewarded by any means, even if solely in our thoughts regarding their accomplishments. We must never forsake proper protocol, even if someone else has been able to achieve the same ends by taking a short cut. As I am taking a History of the English language class this semester, I must inform you that one of the greatest linguistic advantages one can posses is the acquisition of the English language, not only because it is one of the hardest and most arbitrary languages to acquire, save for Latin and in my opinion the Asian languages, but also because of its prominence in our global society. Nonetheless do not underestimate the advantages of being multilingual, it makes the individual very marketable in almost evey workplace and allows one to reach a broad spectrum of people that would not otherwise be able to be reached, and as i always say....without words(language) what can you say???

First let me clarify my statement. What was meant by me saying that not speaking English has become an advantage, was referring not the lack of power the English language now holds, but the dominance of other languages in this country (e.g. through immigration, etc…) . Billy’s comment (see above) directly refers to my point: “especially if you're in Miami”. What I derived from that statement is the amounts of Spanish speaking citizens as well as non-citizens are the dominant culture in that region - thereby making the use of the English language a disadvantage. An example of this would be a majority of American owned restaurants in or near areas where there are elevated levels of concentrated diversity. Generalizing; one would find that these kitchens are predominantly filled with non-English speaking immigrants, due to low wages and high turnover rates. Yet, (and I am speaking as a primary source) the restaurant owners and managers are more inclined to attempt to communicate in Spanish before the more logical antithetical situation would occur. Why is that? Because communities of Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and countless other groups have lost the need to assimilate to the English speaking society, and are content in their own culturally hermetic cities. If you go to china town there are stores that have no signs in English, nor people inside that speak English. I am sure now that you can see what I mean by my saying that these groups can “manipulate the system”. Also to clarify again, I do not “underestimate” being multilingual, it is most definitely a valuable asset; especially for the uses in which I stated previously. As to your first statement; I do not know if you where being philosophical in your soliloquy about forsaking protocol etc.., but I would still like to comment (Briefly). In order for there to be an advancement of ANY civilization, there must be a deviation from standard protocol, sometimes seen as anarchy; this gives rise to an eventual Dialectic, where the Antitheses of the rising power (in our case non-English speakers) are confronted by the Thesis of those within the dated method of thinking (e.g. Nationalist) . What is created is a Synthesis, which could mean more people becoming Multilingual in the United States. Which would make you very happy I assume. ; )

lol yes indeed. I am an english major and the statement that speaking english is not an advantage, taken in any context, was seen to me as a gross injustice. Either way i felt it necessary 2 voice my opinion and then proceed 2 defend my position regarding this statement purely to entertain myself. Lol. I dont have time or energy to disect and redirect any of your more recent rebuttals, since ive been in school all day and am both mentally and physically worn out. But i think we can both agree that this little debate was fun and we must do it again real soon. I'll keep my eyes peeled 4 more controversial statements from the mind of Quaison!

I await with bated breath the reply of the one and only, most beautiful, Jessica Johnson.
